Why Prop 36 is bad news for Richmond

The Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) is proudly standing by the recommendations of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Reimagine Richmond in the campaign against Prop 36.

What is Prop 36?

The California Proposition 36, Drug and Theft Crime Penalties and Treatment-Mandated Felonies Initiative is a state ballot measure headed to the polls this November. We strongly oppose the measure because it will lead to the increased criminalization of marginalized communities in Richmond.

Sentence Lengths and Levels of Crime

First, the measure would allow for felony charges and increased sentences for certain drug offenses. These include fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine possession — as well as theft under $950. Currently, both are chargeable only as misdemeanors.

Prop 36 would also mandate individuals to serve the entirety of their sentence in state prison, regardless of their criminal history.

Fiscal Impact of Prop 36

Increased prison sentences may reduce savings that currently fund critical community programs. That’s potentially tens of millions of dollars less for mental health, drug treatment, K-12 schools, crime victim services, and more. Any remaining savings may be used for new felony treatment programs.

Why Vote No?

By saying "No" to Prop 36, you will make a stand against pervasive mass incarceration and punitive punishments for petty crimes. Rather than leading with police-driven approaches to reduce crimes, we advocate for enhanced investment in the community itself — from poverty reduction and education to healthcare.

Opposition is mounting. Prop 36 is supported by the California Republican Party, law enforcement unions, and district attorney unions.

What You Can Do

  1. Plan on voting "No" on Prop 36 this November
  2. Spread the word by sharing the opposition campaign with family, friends, and neighbors
  3. Read the ACLU Presentation on Prop 36
  4. Follow Reimagine Richmond, a community-based organization focused on researching policies and building life-affirming resources to improve public safety and quality of life for all

We appreciate your support and hope to see you at the polls. Together we can rise above the historic over-policing of Richmond, creating a safer and more equitable place to live.
