Lead Organizer Job Description
Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) has the explicit goal of taking political decision making back from corporations and putting power in the hands of people. The RPA mobilizes people in support of progressive policies and candidates, often in alliance with other local groups.
The position is for a part-time Lead Organizer to focus on building people power and creating intersectional grassroots campaigns and projects within the Just Transition Framework. The Lead Organizer’s work will be directed by the RPA’s Steering Committee.
This role is an independent contractor position. Work is to be performed remotely utilizing hardware and software provided by the RPA. The job is between up to 80 hours a month with a flexible work schedule.
Duties:
Base Building:
- Develop an outreach program to recruit new volunteers and new members to the organization.
- Plan, conduct, manage, and document the learnings from one-on-ones to build RPA’s base
- Create and lead new member orientation
- Train volunteers and steward participation of members and volunteers in existing or new campaigns, projects, and action teams
- Attend and document 5-8 outreach and member events
- Track and proactively respond to trends in member retention.
- Get to know members’ strengths, stories, passions, and interests in order to support them in assuming more leadership roles in relevant programs, projects, action teams, and campaign-related activities (e.g. committee leadership, spokesperson training, etc.).
- Actively problem-solve and support with logistics to reduce barriers to member participation.
Community Organizing:
- Participate in creating strategic vision and advocacy objectives for the RPA.
- Use campaign tactics to achieve advocacy objectives.
- Facilitate select Action Teams meetings, member meetings, and gatherings in an engaging and values-aligned way.
- Create member- and partner-facing written materials including political education materials.
- Prep members to speak at public meetings, actions, or with electeds.
- Lead and train members in canvassing and door-knocking efforts to engage with the community around issues and grow our membership year round.
- Table at events as needed throughout the year.
- Represent the RPA at coalition meetings, city council meetings, and other spaces.
Administrative Work/Duties:
- Track your work using assigned databases, electronic reporting, and other tools.
- Develop a quarterly work plan, produce and submit a weekly report.
- Assist in fund development efforts as requested, including providing narrative and quantitative information to those preparing new grants and reporting on existing grants.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in community organizing and developing leaders.
- Excellent time-management, organizational, and event-planning skills.
- Effective writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage and inspire community members across religion, race, gender, age, language, and class.
- Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues impacting communities in the region.
- Desire to learn and openness to challenges and accountability.
- Ability to guide, direct and support leaders to advocate for equity and inclusion
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to set boundaries to thrive in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.
Term of Agreement:
- Status- part-time staff
- Location- Hybrid must be able to do work in Richmond, CA
- Rate- $40-50/hr
Compensation: Part-Time Staff, not to exceed 80 hours per month
