Born in Alaska and raised in California by a hardworking single mother, Jamin Pursell has called Richmond’s May Valley neighborhood home since 2010, living with his husband and their two dogs. His academic journey began in the California community college system and led to a BA in Political Science and Philosophy from Cal State East Bay, followed by a Master of Science in Law from Pacific University McGeorge School of Law.
A founding board member of Richmond Rainbow Pride and a former member of the May Valley Neighborhood Council and the El Sobrante Valley planning and zoning committee, Jamin's commitment to local governance has been unwavering. His roles as co-chair of the Richmond Shoreline Alliance and involvement in various local organizations underscore his dedication to the community.
As a small business owner and artist, Jamin ensures inclusivity and representation in all his endeavors. He is also a member of the Richmond Progressive Alliance Steering Committee, President of the West County Democratic Club, a board member of the West County Sierra Club, a Task Force member of the Reimagine Public Safety Task Force, and a Commissioner on the Contra Costa Hazardous Materials Commission, and a member of the Contra Costa Fish and Wildlife Committee.
